Heavy swirls of mustard yellow, deep blue and rust red chase each other around a circle. The round shape came first: the drawing was built for it, every curl turning about the middle, so the piece has no top and no bottom and can hang at whatever angle you like.

A circle earns its keep in a room full of right angles: on a den wall beside boxy furniture, in a kid’s room, or above the desk in a home office. It measures 33 in across and weighs 8.8 lbs. On the floor, the non-slip textile back helps hold it in place.

The piece is hand-tufted from acrylic yarn. Guiding a tufting gun, Ksenia Derr fills the drawing in one color at a time on a stretched textile base, then shears the pile even, so each swirl becomes a raised field of yarn with a clean border against the next one and the motion in the drawing survives the making. Acrylic keeps the palette bright and the chores short: a lint roller for dust and pet hair, a light vacuum when it needs one, professional cleaning for anything that goes below the surface.
