A lobster, taken apart and reassembled the way the cubists treated their still lifes: heavy outlines, interlocking fields of red, blue, green and pink, the body shown from several angles at once. The subject is a nod to the tradition of the lobster in still-life painting; the treatment is flat, geometric and loud. This is textile wall art in the strict sense: a hand-tufted picture intended primarily for the wall.

At 172 × 73 cm (67.7 × 28.7 in) it is the largest wall piece in our catalog, a long banner-like format that suits a stairwell, a corridor or the run of wall above a sideboard. The photographs show it on a historic stone staircase, where the saturated palette holds its own against carved ornament: a fair test for a modern piece.

Unlike our smaller wall rugs, it ships without hooks or loops, and that is deliberate. The textile back is prepared for tension framing: a framer, gallery or interior design studio stretches the piece taut the way a canvas is stretched, giving it flat, architectural edges. It arrives unframed, weighs 5.5 kg (12.1 lbs), and was tufted entirely by hand: each color field is a separate area of sheared acrylic pile, with the bold outlines standing as physical boundaries between the colors.
