Look down at the sand the way a gull would: a grandmother stretched out on her blanket, a kid caught mid-game, and a ball already in the air between them. The picture freezes half a second early, so whether that ball lands on sand or on grandmother stays the viewer’s call. Everything around the two figures is flat planes of blue, pink and green, standing in for water, towels and summer light without ever spelling them out.

The size carries the joke: from the far side of a den the canvas reads as one cheerful field of color, and the little drama with the ball only turns up once you walk over to it. Only one of these exists. It is an original acrylic by Ksenia Derr, painted once, signed, never editioned, and no print of it was ever pulled.
