‘Polako’ is the word the Balkans reach for when the world starts hurrying them: slowly, no stress. This painting shows the word in action. Two old friends have met by chance on a country road, stopped their cars in the middle of the road and sunk into conversation as if the rest of the world had switched off. Behind them a queue of traffic builds. The tourists in it honk and gesture; the locals wait without drama, because stopping to talk is not an interruption of life here; it is the life. A snake has used the pause to cross the warm asphalt, adding one more unhurried line to the scene.

None of this is invented satire. Anyone who has driven the back roads of the Balkans has sat in exactly this queue, and the painting takes the side of the two talkers, with the understanding that the viewer may recognize themselves in either camp.

One detail rewards a closer look: a roadside sign reading ‘Privat’, lettered the way such signs actually are on hand-painted boards by local driveways. The spelling is quoted deliberately, error and all, as part of the painting’s documentary humour.
