The smallest paintings in this catalog are true A4 sheets, 11.7 × 8.3 in, acrylic on artist’s board, and this one fits an entire meadow onto that. Sheep doze in the grass under a mild sun with their eyes shut, every rounded silhouette ringed in a calm purple contour, and the green of the field shifts gently from tone to tone instead of lying flat. Nothing in the scene is going anywhere, which is the whole point: a small machine for slowing down.

A piece this size lives differently than a wall-filling canvas. It works on the shelf over a desk, on the narrow wall by a mudroom door, in the corner of a kitchen, in a dorm room: spots a big painting simply cannot reach. And since the sheet is a standard A4, framing stays easy, a stock A4 frame fits it exactly and nothing has to be cut to order.

At $105 this is also the cheapest way into an original from the studio. It is not a print of a popular design and not one of an edition: the acrylic went onto this one sheet by hand, and the sheet carries Ksenia Derr’s signature. Once it sells there will not be an identical second one.
