How to Clean and Care for a Hand-Tufted Rug

Sheared pile reads as fragile, and that first impression is where most of the damage we hear about comes from. Owners split into two camps: the ones who attack it like a bathmat, and the ones too nervous to lay a finger on it. Neither is right, and the correct routine takes about four minutes. It runs on gear already in your hall closet, and the list of things to avoid is longer than the list of things to do. This is what we send our own buyers. The tool you reach for is a lint roller

Day to day, a lint roller does the job. It picks dust, crumbs and shed fur off the surface without tugging at the loops underneath, and for a piece leading an ordinary life that is essentially the whole maintenance program. Run it across the face on a regular basis and the harder questions never come up. It is also the answer for anyone living with animals: a couple of passes and the fur is gone, which is why our portraits hang perfectly happily in the same room as the subject.

Vacuum on the gentle setting

When a roller is no longer cutting it, bring out the vacuum, but keep it soft: suction alone, no beater bar, no leaning into it. Sheared pile is yarn seated in a textile base and held there by a glued back. Treat it gently, because it is not machine-made goods off a roll, and an aggressive brush head fights the surface rather than cleaning it. Follow the vacuum with a quick roll to pick up whatever came loose. Of the two tools, the roller is the one to grab first.

Spilled something? Blot it

Spills call for a calm, straight-down response: press a clean cloth into the spot, working inward from the outside edge, and reach for a mild solution if pressing alone is not enough. The motion is the entire point. Blotting lifts liquid up out of the pile; scrubbing drives it deeper and roughs up the sheared face that gives the drawing its crisp edges.

Set stains belong to a professional

Anything deep or already dried should go to a professional rug cleaner instead of turning into a weekend project. A pro protects both the brightness of the shades and the shape of the piece; repeated home attempts on a bad stain usually cost you more pile than stain. And one rule carries no exceptions: a hand-tufted piece never goes in the washing machine. The glued back that holds all that yarn together was not engineered for a drum and a spin cycle.

On a wall, there is barely anything to do

Half of everything we make goes up as textile art, and a piece on a wall has an easy life of it: no shoes, no crumbs, no claws. An occasional roll or a light vacuum keeps the face looking fresh, and that is the complete regimen. If you have been torn between putting a favorite design on the floor or above the couch, upkeep alone is a decent argument for the wall, whether that wall is in a den, a nursery or a finished basement.
