The framed Smiling Orangutan painting propped against grey rock: an orangutan face built from greens and teals.
Close-up of both eyes, each ringed with concentric strokes and a pale yellow catchlight, lime dashes to the right.
Close-up of the muzzle: a broad lime face, dark teal nostrils and the smiling line of the mouth.
Extreme close-up of one eye, a dark teal spiral around a pale catchlight, with cream dabs marking the brow above.
The smile seen close up in cream and lime, with the nostrils in deep teal just above it.
Both eyes at a little distance, deep emerald and teal, with the top of the muzzle entering at the bottom.

About this piece

An orangutan looks straight out of this small painting, and the gaze is the whole subject: patient, faintly amused, older than seems fair. Instead of naturalistic browns, the face is built from soft greens and deep blues laid on in visible, textured brushstrokes: acrylic used as much for relief as for colour. Up close the surface is all paint; at arm’s length it becomes an animal thinking about you.

The format is a true A4, 29.7 × 21 cm, acrylic on cardboard, which makes this a painting for near distances. It belongs where it can be met at eye level, a desk, a bookshelf, the wall beside a monitor, and any standard A4 frame fits it without custom work.

Small format, original nonetheless. The sheet was painted once and signed; there are no prints, editions or copies. At €90 it shares the catalogue’s entry price with exactly one other work, the sleeping sheep of the neighbouring A4, and the two happen to hang well side by side, though each is sold on its own.

Send an enquiry to reserve it, ordering runs through a short exchange of messages rather than a cart, and the painting, which is in stock, is packed into a tube and dispatched within days. Shipping costs nothing in most countries and is tracked all the way. If you would rather have the same character at a larger size, or another animal taken just as seriously, that is a commission the studio will gladly discuss.
