How Much Does a Custom Tufted Rug Cost?

Search for the price of a custom tufted rug and most of what comes back is written for people who want to make one: comparisons of tufting guns, yarn calculators and frame plans. Those guides are useful if you are taking up the craft. They do not tell you what a finished commission will cost before you write to a studio. This buyer’s guide uses our current prices.

The short answer

A custom commission in our studio starts at €240 for an 84 × 84 cm (33 × 33 in) rug. Finished works in the catalogue run from €180 to €770, and a custom piece lands on the same scale, because it is the same work: a design drawn by hand, tufted with a gun, sheared with shears. What moves a quote up or down are three things: size, design complexity and material.

Size: the price follows the area

The largest single factor is simply how much rug there is. Every design is drawn from scratch, so any size can be commissioned, and the price follows the area. An 84 × 84 cm square and a 280 × 140 cm floor piece require very different amounts of yarn, frame space and tufting time.

Complexity: an abstract is not a portrait

Two rugs of identical size can carry different prices, and the difference is in the drawing. In our catalogue an abstract 84 × 84 cm design is €220, while a pet portrait in the same format starts at €310. A portrait means a pencil drawing worked up from a photograph, a mockup with dozens of matched yarn shades, and shearing that sculpts details as small as the rim of an eye. Flat fields of colour ask less of the maker; fur that has to look like a particular animal’s fur asks more.

Material: acrylic, blends, wool

We tuft with acrylic yarn, acrylic–wool blends and wool, and the choice affects the quote. Most catalogue pieces are acrylic; it holds colour in daylight and the day-to-day care is short, with wool and blends priced individually for the design in question.

These are actual prices of works in our catalogue, not estimates, so you can place your own idea on the scale. Most pieces at these sizes are made to order and tufted for you in two to three weeks. Rows marked in stock ship within five to ten days.

Larger floor rugs, two and a half to three metres, have been tufted in this studio and priced in the €550–770 range; those pieces have since found their homes, and a rug at that scale is quoted individually.

How payment works

You never pay for a rug you have not seen on paper. A commission starts with your idea, reference photographs or a rough sketch. We agree size, colours and style, then send a final mockup together with the quote. A 50% deposit confirms the order and the studio begins; the balance is due only after you have approved final photos and video of the finished piece. We accept major credit cards, PayPal and bank transfers.

What the price includes

Shipping is free across the EU and to the US, with a tracking number, and a 7-day guarantee covers any transit issues. A made-to-order rug takes two to three weeks before dispatch; delivery usually adds five to ten days. Pieces already in stock leave the studio within a few days. There is no separate charge for the design work, the mockup or the revisions before approval; that is part of what a hand-tufted commission is.
