White Lipizzaner partly concealed behind a wooden partition

About this piece

At the edge of a historic riding hall in Vienna, a Lipizzaner stands partly hidden behind a wooden partition. The arena is outside the frame. Only a small white horse reflected in the Lipizzaner’s eye reveals the performance beyond it.

The watching horse is still; the reflected horse is moving. The partition marks the space between waiting and entering the arena, between remaining unseen and receiving applause.

This is the quiet moment before the horse takes part. As he watches, the distant performance begins to look like a possible future of his own. The reflected figure may be another horse, or the self he imagines stepping into the light.
